Formation and Execution of Curricula(1) Five courses of study (Accounting and Public Finance; Economic Thought and Economic History; Public Policy; International Economics; and Distribution, Marketing, and Business Management) have been created for the purpose of instituting comprehensive graduate school education that addresses the various demands of modern society while meeting the individual career plans and research interests of graduate students. For each course, a curriculum has been devised that targets each academic specialty to ensure that graduate students acquire requisite knowledge and skills, and are able to make meaningful progress in their respective areas of research. (2) The curriculum of each course is well balanced between theoretical and practical studies. The Accounting and Public Finance course, for example, is designed to foster functional skills with practical classes such as Accounting Special Lectures VI A/B, which is taught by practicing tax accountants. The International Economics course oers classes in trade, overseas investment, and multinational corporations designed to provide graduate students with theoretical and practical knowledge that is indispensable in international business. 2.Methods of Education and Evaluation of Progress(1) A professor in the relevant course oversees each graduate student. The professor also guides the student through the composition of a master’s thesis, assisted by an adjunct professor. The integrated system of instruction helps to advance research and develop student research ability by approaching research themes multi-directionally. (2) An Academic Writing (AW) class was established to help students improve their writing skills and polish their ability to think logically and express themselves clearly. (3) Graduate students must undergo two interim thesis defense sessions before completing their master’s thesis. The defense of interim theses is administered by the graduate student’s adviser as well as other concerned instructors. These interim defense sessions are designed to gauge ■Master’s Program1.Abilities to be Cultivated through Graduate School Education(1) The Master’s Program at the Graduate School of Economics sets the goal of fostering professionals and researchers capable of exercising their abilities in a wide range of elds at a time when corporate business elds have been expanding due to economic transition and deregulation, while understanding that the global economy has produced various problems, and working on eective solutions.2.Desirable Students(1) Individuals who have graduated from the Faculty of Economics, Business Administration, and Commerce or who have scholastic ability equivalent or superior thereto;(2) Individuals who understand the globalization of the economy and business environment, and who wish to gain specialized knowledge and the ability to respond to such conditions;(3) Individuals who understand multidisciplinary issues from the viewpoint of economy, business administration, and commerce, and who wish to nd solutions for such issues;(4) Individuals who wish to deepen their studies as researchers; and (5) Individuals who wish to be educators.3.Evaluation of Individual Capabilities (Methods of Selection)(1) A general entrance examination takes place twice each year. The general examination includes both written and oral segments covering specialized knowledge (2) A special examination takes place twice each year. Undergraduate, graduate (within ve years after graduation) and research students at Kanagawa University who have excellent academic achievements are exempt from the written examination upon faculty recommendation or evaluation of the applicant’s statement of qualication. Exempted students undergo a review of documentation and an interview. (3) An examination for students from abroad takes place twice each year. The examination includes a written section on specialized knowledge, Japanese language prociency, and an interview. (4) A special examination for working adults takes place twice each year. The examination includes an essay and interview.1.Abilities to be Cultivated through Graduate School Education(1) The Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Economics sets the goal of fostering researchers capable of eciently, freely and impartially conducting research on an increasingly globalized and complex economy utilizing methods based on economic theories and policies, historical analysis and international comparison, returning the results to the society, and working on the realization of a better society. 2.Desirable Students(1) Individuals who have completed the master’s program at the Graduate School of Economics, Business Administration, and Commerce or who have scholastic ability equivalent or superior thereto;(2) Individuals who wish to become researchers at universities or research institutions; and (3) Individuals who wish to become educators capable of passing along knowledge obtained through research in a clear and easy-to-understand manner.3. Evaluation of Individual Capabilities (Methods of Selection)(1) A general examination takes place once (spring) each year. The examination includes language prociency and an interview.(2) An examination for students from abroad takes place once (spring) each year. The examination includes language prociency and an interview.In the master’s program, graduate students who have acquired the prescribed number of academic credits and have submitted a master’s thesis that has been evaluated based on the bylaws of their eld of study and approved by their thesis committee are considered to have acquired the following competencies, and are, therefore, awarded a master’s degree (in economics). 1.Decision Making and Practical Skills Demonstrated by Independent   Individuals with Common Sense(1) The ability to evaluate one’s own capabilities and aptitude cultivated through research, which are essential to a career in accounting, particularly as a tax accountant, to a career as a researcher of national or local nancial policy, to a specialized career in public institutions, or to a career as a private business operator as well as the ability to consistently evaluate the social signicance of the individual’s activities and the social contribution of activities carried out by the organization with which the individual is aliated.2. International Way of Thinking and Communication Capabilities(1) Specialized knowledge and foreign language prociency essential for international business persons or researchers, which allows the individual to work on international issues, and the issues of business, human rights, and the environment.3.Specialized Knowledge and Abilities Responding to the Issues and   Demands of Society(1) Creativity that promotes recognition of the positive and negative aspects of globalization and the examination of measures that make globalization eective for society from the viewpoint of economic theories, thought, economic policies, history, business administration, and commercial science.In the doctoral program, graduate students who have submitted a doctoral thesis that has been evaluated based on the bylaws of their eld of study and approved by their thesis committee are judged to have acquired the following competencies, and are, therefore, awarded a doctoral degree (in economics).1.Decision Making and Practical Skills Demonstrated by Independent   Individuals with Common Sense(1) The ability to produce outstanding publications after conducting advanced research in the eld of economics, business administration and commerce while reviewing the social signicance of that research.2.International Way of Thinking and Communication Capabilities(1) Specialized knowledge on overseas countries and regions, foreign language prociency, and the ability to analyze the economic state and history of the relevant countries and regions, which allows the individual to contribute to the cooperative relationship between Japan and other countries and regions.3.Specialized Knowledge and Abilities Responding to the Issues and   Demands of Society(1) The ability to theorize current economic issues from the viewpoint of economic theories and thought, economic policies, history, business administration, and commercial science, and to verify the theories based on data and case studies.(2) The ability to understand and explain various issues that the Japanese and international economy have encountered as well as the political measures necessary to address those problems.■Doctoral Program■Master’s Program■Master’s Program■Doctoral Program■Doctoral ProgramThe doctoral program has established the following curriculum policies to produce graduates with abilities required to become independent researchers in the eld of economics, and foster advanced expertise required for professional work. 1.Formation and Execution of Curricula(1) All professors in the Graduate School of Economics serve as thesis advisors and provide lectures with content specically targeting each eld of academic focus to oer a comprehensive graduate school education that addresses the various demands of modern society while also speaking to the individual research interests of graduate students. 2.Methods and Evaluation of Education(1) All graduate students complete a doctoral thesis in their chosen specialty under the overall guidance of their advisors. Graduate students must deliver multiple presentations both within the graduate school and at open research conferences, while the supervisory committee checks, oversees and provides advice on the thesis.(2) Graduate students work as teaching assistants (TAs), which gives them the opportunity to gain experience and strengthen their abilities as educators. (3) Guidance and advice from the supervisory committee, which is made up of instructors other than the graduate students’ advisors, provides an objective evaluation of student theses and helps foster research ability with the goal of improving the quality of theses by ensuring a review of topics from multidirectional viewpoints. the student’s progress on the thesis and identify any problems that need to be addressed. (4) Graduate students work as teaching assistants (TAs), which gives them the opportunity to gain experience and strengthen their abilities as educators. (5) Each master’s thesis is strictly screened through the implementation of a preliminary examination before nal evaluation.
